Oregon’s Forests

From the oak forests of the Willamette valley to the temperate rainforests of the coast, Oregon’s forests span a range of ecosystems, each shaped by different climates and elevations that support unique plant and animal species.

Temperate Rainforest

Receiving on average 75-90 inches of rainfall a year and up to 200 inches on the crests, the forests of the coast range are some of the wettest places in the United States. This abundant rainfall sustains a dense canopy of conifers like Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and Douglas-fir, as well as an understory filled with ferns, mosses, and shrubs such as salal and Oregon grape.
